Born in 1953 in Barcelona, Catalonia. Graduated in 1978 as MD at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Board certified radiation oncologist in Spain since 1983. Senior Resident, and Clinical and Research Fellow at the Radiation Medicine Department (Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA), at the Edwin Steele Laboratory of radiobiology, and at the Harvard University Cyclotron Laboratory (in Cambridge, MA) (1987, 1988, and 1989). Since 1991, staff radiation oncologist at the Radiation Oncology Department of the University Hospital of Geneva (Switzerland) elected Chairman of the same Department and Professor at the University of Geneva Medical School in 2007. Medical Director at the QuironSalud Protontherapy Center in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, since 2018.
Preeminent role in the start and development of the protontherapy program at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) (Villigen, Switzerland) since 1997 leading in 2005 the creation of a protontherapy program for pediatric tumors at PSI in collaboration with the Swiss Pediatric Oncology Group. Chairman of the Swiss Proton Users Group (1999-2007). Cofounder in 2019 of TERAPET SA aiming to develop advanced technology in the treatment (with proton beams) and in the diagnosis (with PET) of cancer. Strongly implicated in the assessment of biomathematical models of response to radiotherapy with large fractions. Author of 197 peer-reviewed papers (PubMed); 12’394 citations, h-index=60 (Google Scholar). Ranked #1 in Spain and in Switzerland and #4 in Europe (AD scientific index 2023).
