Dr Kat Arney is a multi award-winning science writer, broadcaster and author, and is the founder and Creative Director of science communications agency First Create The Media. We are a communications consultancy specialising in life sciences and the convergence of biology and technology. We believe that it’s not enough to do great science: it needs context, clarity and a coherent story to make an impact and attract the right kind of attention.

First Create The Media brings together a team of experts with decades of experience in research communication to provide strategic consultancy and content for a wide range of clients in the life sciences sector such as universities, large companies, charities and start-ups, helping them get their science and their stories to the audiences that matter. We are proud winners of two Drum Online Media awards and were shortlisted as the best business support organisation in the OBN 2021 and 2022 awards.
Our clients include: Abcam; Arctoris; AstraZeneca; Baseimmune; Biofidelity; Biognosys; British Society for Immunology; Centre For Genomic Regulation, Barcelona; Depixus; Dunhill Medical Trust; Evonetix; The Genetics Society; Global Gene Corp; Health Data Research UK; Illumina; Isogenica; Prokarium; The Francis Crick Institute; Wellcome Sanger Institute; ZOE COVID Study.

Kat holds a first class degree in Natural Sciences and a PhD from Cambridge University. After leaving the lab, Kat spent 12 years in the science communications team at Cancer Research UK, telling the stories of the charity’s science and scientists to the world. She has been freelance since 2016 and set up First Create The Media in 2018 to help companies and organisations in the life sciences tell their stories to the world.
Kat is the author of three books: Herding Hemingway’s Cats: Understanding how our genes work; How to Code a Human; and Rebel Cell: Cancer, evolution and the science of life. She also presents the popular Genetics Unzipped podcast for The Genetics Society, and has fronted several BBC Radio 4 science documentaries including the recent series Ingenious, looking at the stories behind our genes.
