Full professor of the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Valencia. Co-director of the cross-cutting program Aging and associated diseases and member of the Innovation Committee of the Institute of Health Research INCLIVA.
Recognized with international and national prizes: Young Investigator Award (2004, Society for Free Radical Research International), Catherine Pasquier Award (2009, Society for Free Radical Research Europe), the García Blanco Medal Prize (2005, Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe (CIPF) and Universitat de València) and the V Basic Research Prize (2010, FIHCUV). Selected as one of the 25 Persons in the world with an outstanding idea in the field of aging by the “Science for Life Extension” Foundation.
Research production
3 six-year research periods (2012-2017), 13 theses, 5 international, and one with special recognition. 5 ongoing theses. Total citations: 10442, 27 articles with more than 100 citations. Citations/year (last 5 years): 444. H index 50. I10 index 87. 113 articles in journals with impact index registered in the JCR of the ISI web, 73 in Q1, 51 as first/corresponding author (Scopus). She has also published 10 book chapters (6 international and 4 national). She has also made 3 research contracts with private companies (NISA Foundation, FiPharma, and Asea Global).
Pre-doctoral stay in London at The Centre for Cardiovascular Biology and Medicine in Kings College, London, with Prof Giovanni E. Mann, studying the protective effect of soya administration on antioxidant enzyme levels and cardiovascular function (FASEB J. 2005). As a postdoc, she stayed at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas in Madrid, with Dr. María A. Blasco and Dr. Manuel Serrano, where she studied genes related to successful aging such as p53 and telomerase (Nature. 2007; Cell. 2008). More recently, she has stayed with Dr. Ana Mª Cuervo studying autophagy and aging at the Einstein College of Medicine (New York, 2019). Ponent in 87 congresses (33 international)
After twenty years of studying the molecular basis of aging and possible interventions to achieve successful aging, she has found that oxidative stress is related to sex differences in longevity (a. (FRBM, 2003; Aging Cell, 2005; ARS, 2014; Oxid Med Cell Longev. 2019; Mech Ageing Dev. 2021; Oxid Med Cell Longev. 2021 and Sci Adv. 2021). She has also studied the centenarians’ distinct genetic and epigenetic characteristics (Aging Cell. 2014; Sci Rep. 2012, Aging 2016; J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci., 2017, 2019, 2022 (2); Mech Ageing Dev. 2017; Redox Biol 2019 and Free Radic Biol Med. 2019, 2021).
