Andrés Bueno Venegas

I have BSc in biotechnology complemented with a MSc in human genetics and genomics from the University of Barcelona. Throughout my studies, I have acquired sound knowledge in areas such as molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, industrial biotechnology and genetics. I have backed my technical knowledge with hands on experience in international research laboratories in Galway (Ireland) during the last year of my bachelors, and later on in Copenhagen (Denmark), where I did my PhD in health and medical sciences focused on mechanisms of cell division and cancer. Currently, I work at the drug discovery startup, Ankrin therapeutics, where our efforts are focused on developing first-in-class drugs for the treatment of different human cancers. My activities here span two different areas. On one hand, I am responsible for developing the scientific strategy for one of the research programs, which, among other things, entails defining and testing hypothesis that support the development of the research program. In line with this, I have been involved in defining the value proposition for the research program, understanding the market, the competitive landscape as well as how we want to position ourselves as a drug-discovery company focused on cancer. In addition to this, I am also responsible for designing, performing, and reporting laboratory experiments. On the other hand, I am responsible for coordinating the activities occurring within the 2 drug-discovery programs we have at the company. In this case, I manage the communications between the company and key external partners at national (Denmark) and international level. My interest in transferring ideas to real-impact solutions for people has driven me to explore other areas outside of research, and for this reason, I have complemented my scientific knowledge by taking courses in business development (University Cape Town) and venture capital (University Berkeley Law). In line with this, from September 2022 I will be starting a new position as a scientific consultant at the Copenhagen-based consulting firm Emendo Consulting Group within their Research and Development branch. In this position I will be helping Danish-biotech and pharmaceutical companies in their efforts to solve some of their more pressing challenges.
