My name is Alain Costa Pereira, I am 54 years old, I have a degree in
Business Administration, with a specialization in Local Development from
the UN, and specialization in Finance, Auditing and Accounting, in addition
to a Master Environmental Sciences.
My professional experience includes 25 years in positions related to
Financial and Administrative Management, directly in Multinational
companies or through Financial Consulting.
Since 2003, I have been working in activities related to the Carbon Credit
Market. Initially, in Amazon Forest (Itacoatiara / Amazonas), in the Swiss
Multinational, Precious Woods BV, where we started the implementation of
Carbon Credit for the co-connected BK Energia (Today, Mil Energia), which
uses the biomass of Madeira from the Forest Management operation of the
Company Mil Madeiras. Between 2007-2010, I worked as a representative
of the BFFI Investment Fund (Brazilian Forest Found Investment – USA),
which acquired a Sawmill and Laminates company in the city of Itacoatiara,
Amazonas, Brazil, whose assets included the ownership of 400,000 ha in the
Amazon. We started the development of the carbon credit project for these
areas, but due to legal uncertainty and lack of regulatory legislation the
project was shelved. Since then, I have been following the evolution of the
carbon credit market, and in the last 2 years, we have focused work with
investment funds in the prospection of areas eligible for Forest Carbon in
the Voluntary Carbon Market. I confess that I perceive some obstacles to
the carbon credit market, mainly related to the reliability of the projects,
especially when related to the Amazon Forest. Among the most critical
points is the legality of the land, and the specific characteristics of logistics,
monitoring and verifications, not to mention the distribution between the
parts of a project, and the inclusion of social factors. In this way, despite
acting as a link between the origin and the structurer, I realize that the
current models of monitoring and control are incipient, which impedes, in
many cases, the conscious and reliable development of carbon credits,
generating insecurity and distrust about the honesty of the same. It is worth
mentioning that the world’s leading certifier, VERRA, is going through a
“crisis” of reliability, which has forced it to reevaluate its methodologies.
Having said that, I became interested in the position available because I
understand that with the knowledge, skills and experience in the sector, I
can help visualize alternative solutions and promote paths that credit
greater credibility to the processes and finally to the carbon credit
certificates issued.
Thanks for attention,
Cordially,
Alain Pereira
