Hans Johansson

Hans E. Johansson, PhD, DSc, is an independent Scientific Consultant, based in California.

He is an experienced inventor and developer of molecular tools based on chemically and enzymatically synthesized DNA and RNA. These tools have found use in the molecular characterization of how organisms (from yeast to plants and mammals) and cancerous tumors develop, as well as the diagnostics of fungal, bacterial and viral infections, including Zika and SARS-CoV-2. His main focus while at LGC Biosearch Technologies (LGC BT) was in RNA and DNA synthesis and detection, oligonucleotides and modifications for therapeutics, DNA and RNA sequencing, and all aspects of single molecule RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization for the detection and enumeration of mRNAs and lncRNAs in cells and tissue. He was the principal developer or RNA FISH and especially leading the probe design effort at LGC BT. He also lead the development of quality control processes for RNA FISH reagents, and development of advanced oligonucleotides for DNA encoded libraries (DEL/DECL) for drug development.

Dr. Johansson’s primary research interest is to develop and utilize molecular biological techniques, enzymology and microscopy to understand the function of novel therapeutic targets, and RNA biomarkers.

He has 36 scientific and four patent publications. He has been the recipient of several US and Swedish research grants. He has served as a reviewer of numerous scientific article manuscripts and research grants, and has advised and collaborated with biotech companies in US, Sweden, and Germany. He has consulted for multiple biotech companies and organizations.
