Karel De Pourcq

I am a former Plant Biotech. researcher with a rich background as a result of my career and training which includes, among others, Bachelors in Chemistry and Biochemistry and Master’s Degrees in Bioinformatics (specialization in Structure and Function of Proteins and Drug Design) and in Data Journalism. This is complemented with my work in a variety of research-related environments, in contexts such as public health, neuroscience, agrotechnology, as well as more indirectly with more disparate subjects such as mathematics, physics, economics or engineering. My work in the past for the Severo Ochoa – Maria de Maeztu alliance (www.somma.es) , an interdisciplinary alliance of top Spanish research institutions across all areas of knowledge, gave me a wide perspective of numerous fields of research, as well as -complemented by my other experience- granted me insights into the inner workings of tech. transfer, policymaking, regulation and the public administration. I remain to this date interested in the exploration and communication of knowledge, be it from a pure research context, or connected areas. I would describe my profile as eminently cross-disciplinary, leaning strongly towards the life sciences. In addition, I have recently become interested in the application of data journalism approaches to the communication of science, a professional niche towards which I am transitioning.
