Julia Esclapez is Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Alicante (Spain). She has published more than 30 research documents, 24 of which are in scientific journals of international diffusion indexed in SCI (Science Citation Index), among which are Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of The United States of America (PNAS), FEBS Letters or Genes, and 7 in books both national and international publishers.
Julia has contributed more than 80 communications to national and international congresses.
She has participated in more than 25 projects, mostly obtained in public calls for I+D. She has been enrolled in small numbers of projects with companies. She has been the principal investigator of a project awarded by the Generalitat Valenciana (AEST / 2013/062) in which she has carried out the transcriptomic analysis of the Haloferax mediterranei using microarrays.

During her professional career, her research has always been related to extremophilic microorganisms. At the beginning she worked with halophilic enzymes in order to analyze the molecular adaptations to mediums with high ionic strength. During this work, she made two stays in the Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Department at the University of Sheffield (England) and several articles were published, two of them in the journal PNAS. Later, during her postdoctoral period she undertook a visit at the Microbiology Department at the University of Darmstadt (Germany) to learn molecular biology techniques applied to haloarchea, which would later be implemented in our research group. The knowledge acquired in relation to halophilic enzymes and molecular biology in haloarchaea was very useful to study the nitrogen metabolism in haloarchaeas.
