Joan Coines

My name is Joan Coines and I currently work at Cetaqua as Data Scientist applying machine learning techniques to biological processes within the water cycle. I am also a bioinfomatics teacher at  Escuelas Universitarias Gimbernat y Tomàs Cerdà (EUG). Previously, I worked at Nostrum Biodiscovery, a spin-off company in Barcelona focused on computational biochemistry.
My academic background is the following. I graduated in Biochemistry at University of Barcelona (UB) in 2014, obtained a MSc in Bioengineering at Chemical Institute of Sarrià (IQS) in 2016 and a PhD in Computational Biochemistry at UB in 2021. Currently, I am in the final stages of a MSc in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). During this time, I acquired great experience in investigating enzymes by means of computational and theoretical chemistry methods. In particular, I used bioinformatics, molecular dynamics, docking and hybrid methods (QM/MM), combined with enhanced sampling techniques. My investigations have been published in Q1 peer-review journals such as Journal of the American Chemical Society, ACS Catalysis, Angewandte Chemie and Nature Communications.
