Gonçalo da Costa graduated in Biochemistry by the University of Évora in 2002 and completed a PhD degree in Biochemistry by the New University of Lisbon – Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry Technology in 2008. The PhD work was mainly developed at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science, ITQB and in the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark, supervised by Peter Roesptorff, world leader in protein mass spectrometry and proteomics.

In 2011, as a Pos Doc, he was granted the Junior Research Grant from the Amyloidosis Foundation. The primary purpose of this agency is to fund excellent research to eradicate amyloidosis as a life threatening disease. Since then GC has leaded several projects in the amylodosis and proteomics fiel. In 2013 GC was Seniour Research Officer at Mass Spectrometry Core Facility at IRB Barcelona. Since 2015 GC become an Auxiliar Researcher at FCUL, working with amyloid proteins, Mass Spectrometry and proteomics.

GC is one of the founders and currently CSO of the Biotech company Biomimetx SA.
BioMimetx is developping a new biological biocide for marine paints, that is an efficient, environmental-friendly, safe and easy to use solution to prevent marine fouling, ensuring significant reduction of fuel consumption and maintenance costs for the maritime transportation industry, without impacting the environment.
Biomimetx raised 1,6 MEuros from VC investors and won a SME1 and a SME2 grants from the European Comission.
