After doing my Ph.D. on anti-inflammatory therapies for Multiple Sclerosis at the Cajal Institute (CSIC, Madrid, Spain), I have been working the last 16 years as a research scientist on the Spanish National Hospital for Paraplegics (Hospital Nacional de Paraplejicos, Toledo, Spain), focused on finding new therapeutic targets and developing new therapies for spinal cord injury patients. I am the author of more than 30 scientific articles that accumulate roughly 2500 cites (https://scholar.google.es/citations?user=C14MaWgAAAAJ&hl=es). As a senior scientist I am the principal investigator on several research projects aimed to decipher the role of the inflammatory response in spinal cord injury pathology and aimed to identify autoantibodies that may serve as predictive biomarkers of recovery and/or as potential therapeutic targets for spinal cord injury. In this context, I have international collaborations with well established and renowned research groups in Germany, Austria and Canada, and I am one of the international experts invited to give a lecture in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Spinal Cord Injury Centre at the Murnau Trauma Hospital (Murnau, Germany, September 20-21, 2019).
I have been serving for more than ten years as ad hoc reviewer for international journals (Journal of Neurochemistry, Scientific Reports, Neurobiology of Disease, Neurotoxicity Research, Neuropharmacology, Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, Anatomical Record and PLOS One) and I have also served for 2 years as editor of Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation journal. I am a usual evaluator of research proposals for the Biomedicine Area at the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigacion, former ANEP), and as such I have evaluated 32 academic and industrial grant proposals since 2014.
Regarding the translation of biomedical results into the biotechnology market, I am co-inventor of an international patent on the use of a molecule for enhancing the excitability of motoneurons in several neurological conditions (PCT/ES2009/000010, licensed to Neurek SL).
